The Patuxent Ranger who was popular known as Thomas Browne explored westward through the Anne Arundel County through Clarksville. The early B&O contractors, who were involved in the construction of the railroad are peter Gorman and Caleb David. Gorman later got married to Elizabeth Browne, who was from the Brown family and they both lived in the city together. Gorman occupied a large farm area, sold granites for various building projects, and developed a large granite house in the area. The granite house built by Gorman was torn down in the early 1980s to construct a bridge across the Patapsco. This granite house was the birthplace of the prominent Arthur Pue Gorman.
