Westminster started out as 167 acres of land owned by William Winchester. It went by the name Winchester for a time until confusion over another county seat of the same name ensued. The name was then changed to Westminster. Westminster was the site of a Civil War skirmish in 1864 and the following year saw more violence toward the newspaper editor Joseph Shaw. Unfortunately, Joseph Shaw’s killers got off scot-free under the bogus claim of self-defense. More recent events made national news when Westboro Baptist church picketed at the funeral of Iraq war veteran Matthew Snyder. The people of Westminster have managed to move on from this sketchy history and are looking forward to a more streamlined spirit of equality.
Sitting at 39°34′36″N 77°0′0″W, Westminster is about 35 and a half driving miles northwest of Baltimore. It’s at a higher sea level than Chesapeake Bay, therefore it enjoys slightly more comfortable temperatures in spite of its being in the “humid subtropical” zone of the United States.
Speaking of weather, Westminster enjoys typical New England weather with summers approaching nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit and much colder winters hovering in the 20s at night and 40s during the day. Less than a third of the year brings precipitation to the area with only 107 days on average bringing some kind of rain or snowfall. It receives a good 45 inches of precipitation a year, but that number is divvied up between rain and snow. More often than not, Westminster is getting sunny to partly sunny weather rather than rainy or snowy weather.
