New Windsor used to be called Sulphur Springs and was considered a ritzy getaway for the rich. It had a relaxing and upscale spa down by the water. In the early 19th century the name was changed to New Windsor, perhaps after an early English settler. Ever since 1942, United Church of the Brethren has used New Windsor as its headquarters, and the church’s influence has been responsible for inspiring missionary efforts and also the international scope of the Peace Corps. Today it is home to not quite 2000 residents and is a peaceful village with a surprising availability of many things to do and see.

It’s always interesting to see how a town has grown and flourished from its humble beginnings. New Windsor is particularly gratifying because of its special inception as a relaxing getaway for the wealthy that has now become a center for worldwide compassion, as encouraged by the United Church of the Brethren’s service-oriented philosophies. Different from other local towns, it still has the ambience of a colored history but forward-thinking population and an eagerness to make any and all visitors welcome.
