Mt. Airy is a hardy town that began in the 1800s in spite of some surprising disasters such as three devastating fires in a twenty-year span. The railroad, which was responsible for its early growth, continued to bring the population up, and the town gained even more population growth during the Great Depression. Small businesses that kept it thriving were a cannery, barber shop and town store, as well as a barber shop and later on, a motion picture cinema. As the town grew, so did its need for schools. What started out as a small school in the basement of the town chapel became enough students to qualify for a state-accredited high school…though the actual building wasn’t built right away. Currently, Mt. Airy boasts a fine population though residents no longer require the railroad as a large employer. Instead, many citizens work and commute to Washington DC or Baltimore. Now the B&O Railroad and surrounding buildings have been recorded in the National Reserve of Historic Places.
Mt. Airy is located on a ridge of a small mountain range with valleys extending outward all around, giving it an exceptional landscape of peaks, ridges and dips. It sits at approximately 850 feet above sea level at 39°22′29″N 77°9′20″W. Surrounded by hills and waterways, it’s principally on top of a drainage basin with several watersheds in close proximity.
The weather in Mt. Airy is typically humid and warm in the summer months and enjoys a four season variety of climate changes due to its location related to the coast and its altitude. The average temperature is 54 degrees, but it gets into the 90s in midsummer. Mt. Airy receives plenty of precipitation with an average precipitation measurement of 45 inches. 25 of those come as snow in the winter.
