Marriottsville had a rocky beginning, what with a disastrous railroad car derailing with dozens of local leaders aboard in 1836 and a flood in 1866 that wiped out a prosperous mill. Currently unincorporated, this town sprung from land on the estate of General Richard Marriott in the late 1600s. From 1965 to the mid-70s, large pieces of Marriottsville, formerly known as Alpha, were parceled out in hopes of forming a community development. Ironically, it was chosen as a landfill site instead. Further issues arose when groundwater was found to have some contamination. Now, however, Marriottsville has proven to be a down-to-earth place to stop for a bit of relaxation or a bite to eat.
