The east coast community of Glenwood, Maryland, located in Howard County, contains acres upon acres of open land. The community of Glenwood was settled by the Ridgley and Warfield families in the early 1700s. James B. Matthews bought a 200-acre farm in 1822 and then opened a post office in 1841. The Anne Arundel community joined Howard County, which was still new at this time, in 1833. The Glenwood postal stop opened in 1874 and James Matthew’s son, Professor Lycurgus Matthews, renamed it Glenwood.
