Glenelg, Maryland is located in Howard County, a very high-income area which is the second wealthiest county in the whole country. Glenelg is a fairly rural area known for farms and the newly built “McMansions.” The community formed when John Dorsey, one of the first settlers in Howard County, gave a big chunk of land to his daughter Sarah Dorsey Howard and her husband in 1735. Later, Sarah’s son, Ephraim, built a home on the land. Later, an addition was added to the home by General Joseph Tyson and his wife and they named it Glenelg. It was named after an old Scottish estate but also because it was a palindrome, meaning that it’s spelled the same forwards and backwards. Today, the home is known as Glenelg manor and it is the origin of the community’s name.

Glenelg Manor, the home for which the Glenelg, Maryland community is named after, is a private school that houses the Glenelg County School elementary division. The school, which was founded in 1954, offers an endless college prep program from age 2 all the way up to the 12th grade. There are 750 students enrolled in the school and 165 faculty members. The average class size is only 15 students and 38% of students receive financial aid and grants.
