Glenelg, Maryland is located in Howard County, a very high-income area which is the second wealthiest county in the whole country. The average house income of Glenelg residents is just over $114,000 per year with the median home price being over $1,012,000. The median house size is 5,757 square feet and the estimated population within the community is approximately 828 residents.

Glenelg is a fairly rural area known for farms and the newly built “McMansions.” The community formed when John Dorsey, one of the first settlers in Howard County, gave a big chunk of land to his daughter Sarah Dorsey Howard and her husband in 1735. Later, Sarah’s son, Ephraim, built a home on the land. Later, an addition was added to the home by General Joseph Tyson and his wife and they named it Glenelg. It was named after an old Scottish estate but also because it was a palindrome, meaning that it’s spelled the same forwards and backwards. Today, the home is known as Glenelg manor and it is the origin of the community’s name.

The racial demographics in Glenelg are 4% African American (34 people), 2% Mixed Race (19 people), and 94% White (887 people). 46% of the residents of Glenelg (437 people) are women and 54% (305 people) are men. Out of all of the residents old enough to do so, 40% (248 people) have a graduate degree, 54% (331 people) have a bachelors or associate degree, and 6% (37 people) have a high school diploma. 11% (105 people) of the Glenelg population are 9 years old or younger, 20% of the population (190 people) are 10 to 17 years old, 3% (29 people) are 18 to 24 years old, 11% (108 people) are 25 to 39 years old, 50% (472 people) are 40 to 64 years old, and 4% (36 people) of the Glenelg population is 65 years or older.

The average class size is only 15 students and 38% of students receive financial aid and grants.

Glenelg High School, which opened in 1958, has a total student population of 1,185 and a total teacher count of 78. The school consists of mostly white students with only 140 non-white students.

Though there are a few Landmarks in the Glenelg area- the United Methodist church stand as a Landmark and Historical site to all.
