Glenelg is a fairly rural area known for farms and the newly built “McMansions.” The community formed when John Dorsey, one of the first settlers in Howard County, gave a big chunk of land to his daughter Sarah Dorsey Howard and her husband in 1735. Later, Sarah’s son, Ephraim, built a home on the land. Later, an addition was added to the home by General Joseph Tyson and his wife and they named it Glenelg. It was named after an old Scottish estate but also because it was a palindrome, meaning that it’s spelled the same forwards and backwards. Today, the home is known as Glenelg manor and it is the origin of the community’s name.
